Michael’s Story

Michael was referred to the ESCAPE-Pain programme after persistent back pain and osteoporosis began affecting his daily life.
He was struggling with pain, stiffness and mobility, and was concerned his health would impact his ability to care for his brother, who has dementia.
What Healthworks did:
Michael participated in the 12-session ESCAPE-Pain Rehabilitiation Programme, taking part in supervised exercise and education to improve his strength, mobility and confidence.
We also helped to develop a home exercise routine for him and encouraged him to continue exercising through Healthworks Next Steps classes.
ESCAPE-Pain Outcomes:
By the end of the programme, Michael reported that his back had “freed up” and he was experiencing significantly less pain and stiffness, particularly in the mornings.
His outcome measures showed improvements in 11 of 14 musculoskeletal health categories.
Feeling healthier also gave Michael the confidence that he could remain active and continue caring for his brother.
The exercises have made such a difference.
My mornings are much easier now and I’m moving with far less pain.
I feel well enough to continue looking after my brother, and I’ve got the confidence to keep exercising and looking after my own health.
