Investors in the Environment

At Healthworks, environmental sustainability is a core focus of everything we do.

We’re excited to share that Healthworks has earned the Investors in the Environment (IIE) Silver Award!

This achievement shows our strong commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment, and it highlights our goal to create a healthier future for our community and the planet.

As a health and wellbeing organisation, we believe it’s essential to protect the environment for the wellbeing of our clients, staff, and everyone around us.

The Investors in the Environment programme has helped us track our progress and improve our environmental impact.

What the Silver Award Means

Getting the Silver Award shows that we are serious about making positive changes. It recognises our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and get our staff and clients involved in caring for the environment. This award isn’t just a recognition; it motivates us to keep improving and encourages others to do the same.

What’s next?

While we’re proud of this milestone, we know it’s just the beginning. We aim to reach the Gold Award next, and we’re excited about the projects we have planned. By continuing to innovate and engage with our community, we hope to inspire others to take action for the environment.

iiE is an accessible and proven route to help organisations get started on their sustainability journey and make a real impact. It has been running for over 12 years, and in that time has helped hundreds of organisations from all sectors and sizes to improve their environmental performance. The scheme is owned and managed by a sustainability charity.

Our commitment to building a sustainable future

In the past year, Healthworks has made great progress in several areas, including:

  • Energy efficiency: We have put measures in place to save energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Waste reduction: We’ve improved our recycling programs and cut down on single-use plastics, significantly reducing waste.
  • Sustainable procurement: We focus on buying from suppliers who care about sustainability, making sure our purchases reflect our values.

We’ve also taken the following actions to reduce our environmental impact:

  • Introducing recycling bins at both sites
  • Using digital communications as much as we can to reduce the amount of paper being used
  • Reducing single-use plastics wherever possible
  • Reducing the use of paper towels
  • Promoting love food hate waste messages
  • Developing ‘save energy save money’ information
  • Developing staff guidance to help save energy and reduce waste
  • Installing light sensors where appropriate
  • Installing thermostats in the gyms
  • Using solar panels
  • Using recycled paper

Smart Carbon Reporting

Below, you’ll find two key graphs from our Smart Carbon reporting, illustrating how we are performing against our sustainability targets and detailing the sources of our emissions.

These graphs are updated annually to reflect our progress, as we work to meet and exceed our environmental goals. This ongoing reporting is an integral part of our commitment to achieving the IiE Silver level.

Carbon emmissions

This graph shows Healthworks’ carbon emissions for 2023 to 2024, highlighting key areas for improvement.  A significant portion of these emissions comes from travel, and reducing this impact is a focus for Healthworks moving forwards.

Achieving Net Zero

Since starting our environmental journey, we have made green changes that have positively affected our carbon emissions.

We are on track to achieve our goal of becoming Net Zero by 2040, and if we keep this momentum, Healthworks could reach Net Zero as early as 2030!
