Healthworks Stop Smoking Service – Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to quit smoking straight away?

No. You don’t need to be ready to quit when you contact us.  Many people start by simply talking things through, learning about their options, and understanding how the stop smoking service works.  We support you at your own pace and meet you where you are.

What if I lapse or start smoking again?

Lapses are common and normal – they are part of the quitting process, not a failure. We focus on learning what happened and helping you move forward with more confidence, rather than judging or starting over from scratch.

Will I be judged or lectured for smoking?

Absolutely not.  Smoking is complex and often linked to stress, habits, emotions, trauma, routines, and environment.  Our stop smoking advisors are here to support you, not blame you. We work in a way that feels safe, respectful, and manageable for you.

What if smoking helps me cope with stress?

Many people use smoking as a way to cope with stress or difficult emotions.  We understand this. Alongside stop smoking support, we can help you explore other ways to manage stress while supporting your quit journey.

I’ve smoked for years – is it too late to quit?

It’s never too late to quit smoking. Health benefits start almost immediately after cutting down or stopping, no matter how long you’ve smoked. Quitting at any age can improve your health and wellbeing.

Do I have to use medication or vapes to quit?

No – the choice is always yours.  We’ll talk through all available options, including nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), prescription medication, vapes, or quitting without medication. While NRT can improve success rates, we’ll support you to find what feels right for you.

How long does the stop smoking support last?

The service offers up to 12 weeks of support, with regular check-ins to help you stay on track, manage cravings, and overcome challenges as they come up.

Is the stop smoking service confidential?

Yes. All support is confidential. We understand concerns about privacy, stigma, or others finding out, and we take your confidentiality seriously.

If you’re looking for free, confidential stop smoking support, our service is here to help –  whether you’re ready to quit now or just thinking about it.

Stop Smoking Service Information For Professionals

The Stop Smoking Service supports adult smokers at any stage of readiness. High motivation is not required at referral – readiness can be built through support.

The service accepts self-referrals and professional referrals from health, community, mental health, and social care services.

Support is free, NICE-aligned, and delivered through an evidence-based programme of up to 12 weeks, offering behavioural support alongside NRT, stop smoking medication (where appropriate), and vape support.

Support is delivered flexibly via telephone, face-to-face, or video appointments.

To make a referral, please telephone 0191 272 4244 or contact us.

Beyond our community based support, we’re proud to work with local partners to bring stop smoking help into clinical settings – so support is available wherever you need it most.

Project Spotlight: Working with Newcastle Hospitals Trust

Our stop smoking advisors also offer stop smoking support to in-patients in Newcastle Hospitals.

The Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service (TDTS) is a joint initiative between Newcastle Hospitals and Healthworks, aiming to combat tobacco dependence and support healthier recovery for all in-patients who smoke.

Launched in November 2022, this partnership receives 1,000 to 2,000 referrals per quarter from inpatient wards across Newcastle hospitals.   The programme plays a vital role in maintaining the hospitals’ smoke-free status by offering personalised support to smokers.

All patients are invited to use this service as part of their care.
