Newcastle Becomes a Marmot City: A Step Towards Health Equality
Yesterday, the Healthworks team attended the launch of Newcastle’s plan to become a Marmot City.
This event, held at Newcastle City Council, was led by our Patron, Professor Sir Michael Marmot, and Alice Wiseman, Director of Public Health for Newcastle.
The launch is an important step in tackling health inequalities and creating a fairer, healthier future for all.
What is a Marmot City?
A Marmot City recognises that social factors – such as where we are born, grow, live, work, and age – affect our health.
By becoming a Marmot City, Newcastle is committed to improving these factors to ensure everyone has a fair chance at good health. This approach focuses on reducing health gaps by making policies that support better living conditions for all residents.
Why It Matters for Newcastle
Health inequalities are a big issue in the North East.
By following the Marmot approach, Newcastle aims to tackle the issues by working across different areas like health, education, housing, and jobs to improve overall wellbeing.
Professor Sir Michael Marmot is a global expert in health equality. His research stresses the need for change, and his support of Newcastle’s plan highlights the city’s commitment to better health for all.
