Innovative New ‘Squat Height Ruler’ Created to Support Home-Based Hypertension Research
As part of an exciting collaborative research project between Healthworks North East and Dr. Gabriel Cucato at Northumbria University, work is underway to explore the feasibility and acceptability of home-based isometric exercise and lifestyle change as a method for managing hypertension.

To support this research, PhD student Helen Llewellyn has designed an innovative new tool – a ‘squat height ruler’ prototype.
This simple but clever device helps participants maintain a standardised wall squat position, ensuring everyone follows the protocol safely and accurately from home.

We are incredibly grateful to Abigail Durrant and the Northern Health Futures (NortHFutures) Hub, who kindly agreed to fund the development of the rulers. The final version has been produced in collaboration with the brilliant Ben Morris at Open Lab, Newcastle University, bringing together academic insight and practical design expertise.
Because this research is designed to be home-based, making instructions clear, accessible, and easy to follow is essential. The new rulers will play a crucial role in helping participants understand exactly how to perform the exercise.
Study Recruitment Opens January 2026
The study will officially begin in January 2026, and researchers are now looking to recruit participants who:
