What is Healthworks and what do you do?

Healthworks is a local charity supporting people of all ages across the North East to improve their health and wellbeing.

We deliver a wide range of community-based services, activities and programmes designed to help people live healthier, happier lives and reduce health inequalities.

We work with individuals, families, workplaces and communities to provide practical support, encouragement and opportunities to make positive changes.

Who can access Healthworks services?

Our services are open to people of different ages and backgrounds, including those who may be facing health challenges, long-term conditions, or barriers to accessing support.

Some services are available to the wider public, while others are delivered through referrals or partnerships with health and community organisations.  Explore our services to find out more about each.

How do I find out which service is right for me?

If you’re not sure what would suit your needs, you can contact our team directly and we’ll help you understand your options and how to get involved.

Do I need a referral to access your services?

Many of our weekly activities are open to all and don’t require a referral.

Some Healthworks services can be accessed directly through self-referral, while others may require a referral from a GP, health professional or partner organisation.

Each service is slightly different, so we recommend checking the individual service page or contacting us for guidance.

What types of health and wellbeing programmes do you offer?

We offer a range of programmes focused on improving health, wellbeing and quality of life. This includes support with:

  • physical activity and exercise
  • healthy lifestyles and nutrition
  • managing long-term conditions
  • wellbeing and community support
  • stop smoking services
  • pain management programmes such as ESCAPE-Pain
  • Staying Steady falls prevention programme
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding support

  • activities for children with a visual impairment and their families

How can I join the Healthworks gym or exercise classes?

Healthworks runs welcoming community gyms and exercise opportunities for people of all abilities.

Do you offer services for children, young people and families?

Yes. Healthworks supports families, children and young people through a variety of services, activities and wellbeing support.

We run a weekly programme of play and learning activities for under 5s and their families. You can visit our What’s On page to find an activity that’s right for you.

We also have a daily Pre-school at our Lemington centre, providing a welcoming space for young children to learn, play and develop.

Our Useful Vision service supports North East children living with visual impairment and their families, offering accessible, positive opportunities and activities.

In addition, we provide Pregnancy and Breastfeeding support for families living in Newcastle.

Where are Healthworks based?

Healthworks operates from our bases at the Health Resource Centre in Benwell and The Lemington Centre, as well as other local venues.

Do you offer room hire for community groups or organisations?

Yes.  Healthworks offers room hire at The Health Resource Centre in Benwell and The Lemington Centre, for community groups, training sessions and local events.

Rooms are accessible and equipped with useful facilities.
