Supporting Patients to Live Smoke-Free Lives: The Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service
Smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death, but the right support at the right time can make all the difference.
That’s why Healthworks Newcastle is proud to be working in partnership with Newcastle Hospitals to deliver the Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service (TDTS) – a service that’s helping thousands of patients take their first steps towards a smoke-free future.
A collaborative approach to better health
Launched in November 2022, TDTS is a joint initiative between Healthworks and Newcastle Hospitals designed to support in-patients who smoke during their hospital stay.
The service processes between 1,000 and 2,000 referrals each quarter from wards across the Trust, offering personalised, practical support to help people quit.
This programme plays a vital role in maintaining Newcastle Hospitals’ smoke-free status, while also supporting patients to make a positive, long-term change for their health.
Every patient admitted to Newcastle Hospitals is invited to use the Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service as part of their care. TDTS practitioners provide tailored advice, nicotine replacement therapy, and ongoing support to help patients quit.
Leading the way in tobacco dependency treatment
Angela Clarke, TDTS Service Manager, is passionate about making a difference:
“This service is about supporting people when they’re at a key point in their health journey. By offering the right support in hospital, we can help people take a really important step towards a healthier future.”
