Our Best Start volunteers are an incredibly important part of what we do, offering practical and emotional support through the breastfeeding journey.
All our volunteers are trained by our skilled and experienced team.
Best Start Breastfeeding Peer Support
Best Start Volunteers are parents who have breastfed (or are breastfeeding) and who have a positive attitude towards breastfeeding.
They promote breastfeeding in a friendly and sensitive manner and support our Best Start team to provide peer support services to breastfeeding women and their families.

You need to have experience of breastfeeding to volunteer with Best Start. No previous volunteering experience is needed – just a caring, supportive, non-judgemental attitude and a positive attitude towards breastfeeding.
Yes. We provide a free 10-week Breastfeeding Peer Support Volunteer Course delivered by our experienced team.
Training covers:
- Safeguarding
- Information governance
- Specialist feeding plans
- Breastfeeding peer support skills
- Supporting families confidently and safely
Absolutely. You’ll receive regular support and guidance from our Volunteer Coordinator throughout your volunteering journey.
You may ben asked to volunteer:
- In person
- Over the telephone
- At breastfeeding peer support groups
- Through community and family engagement activities and events
Yes, agreed out-of-pocket expenses associated with volunteering will be re-imbursed.
